Coaching Highlights: Jason has coached football for 23 years including the last 13 seasons at Pleasant Valley where he is the offensive line coach for the Spartans. He has coached several athletes that went on to play college football at all levels and one that is currently playing in the NFL. Most recently he helped lead the Spartans to a state quarterfinal playoff berth in 2021. He returns to the track and field coaching ranks after previously being boy's track and field coach at Clinton High School in Clinton, IA where he was head coach for 5 seasons. As head coach, he led the River Kings to two MAC conference titles and was named MAC Conference Coach of the Year for one season.
Since 2018, Jason has had tremendous success in revitalizing our throws program. His first year was the catalyst, which saw all throwers record personal bests in both the shot put and discus that season. By season's end, the Spartans were consistent scorers in the throwing events at both the JV and varsity levels. Led Kaitlyn Morgan and Ilah Perez-Johnson to state-qualifying berths in the discus, and Morgan to a state-qualifying berth in the shot put.
In 2019, the Spartan throwers saw continued success under Coach Vice's tutelage, with all throwers recording all-time personal bests in the shot put and discus during the season. Highlighting the group was Ilah Perez-Johnson, who was conference and district champion in the shot put, and a state medalist in the event placing 7th. 2021 was a banner year for Coach Vice and his throwers. Continuing to see growth each week, Riley Vice emerged as a force in the state under his guidance. Qualifying for the Drake Relays in both the shot put and the discus, Coach Vice led Riley to a 4th place finish in the discus and a state championship in the shot put at the 2021 state meet. In 2022, the Spartans continued their breakthrough with the growth of juniors Katelyn Kiefer, Lexi Pelzer, and Rachel Vonderhaar, sophomore Reese Goodlet, and the addition of freshman Gabriella Ragins. Reese Goodlet was a first-time 2022 Drake Relays qualifier in the discus, and at the state meet she brought her teammates with her. The Spartans had multiple qualifiers in the state meet in the discus and the shot put for the first time, sending Katelyn Kiefer and Rachel Vonderhaar in the shot put and Kiefer and Goodlet in the discus. Reese Goodlet completed her season as Class 4A runner-up in the discus.
The 2023 season was full of highlights for Coach Vice and his throwers. Jason led three qualifiers to the 2023 Drake Relays as Mackenzie Fah (shot put), Gabby Ragins (discus), and Reese Goodlet (discus) all qualified with Reese leaving as a medalist with a 2nd place finish in the discus. To put this group in more rarefied air, the Spartans had four separate qualifiers for the 2023 state meet with Rachel Vonderhaar and Mackenzie Fah qualifying in the shot put, and Reese Goodlet and Gabby Ragins qualifying in the discus. Mackenzie Fah walked away as the 2023 Class 4A State Champion in the shot put and Reese Goodlet took another step forward as the Class 4A State Champion in the discus. Gabby Ragins also medaled with a 7th place finish in the discus. Reese re-set the standard in the discus event for Pleasant Valley and set a new school record with a throw of 146'7" at the state meet.
